The "Osservatorio Astronomico del Monte Baldo" is located within the Natural Science and Scientific park of Novezzina on Monte Baldo. It is the only public observatory in Verona and it is managed by the Astrophiliac Veronesi Circle. The observatory was inaugurated on July 30th 2005. The observatory’s altitude and location makes for some excellent star gazing opportunities for beginners as well as more experienced astronomers.
During the spring and summer months the Observatory has a series of twelve to fifteen evening openings for the public. These evenings are open to all who would like to attend and no prior booking is required. The evening activities start at 9pm with an astronomy conference, followed by a tour of the observatory and the instruments. If the skies are clear then you can end the evening by observing the wonders of the night sky. The observatory takes bookings for groups of between twenty and fifty individuals. Each group enjoys a conference and has observation opportunities, weather permitting of course. Advanced booking is necessary for group visits.
The observatory houses an impressive range of telescopes Including a Schmidt Cassegrain 400mm for visual observation, and a Ritchey Chretien for research and photography. Both of these telescopes are mounted on German Equatorial Frames. The Observatory also has three refractors reserved for solar observation and study and a 500mm Dobsonian. The observatory uses CCD and CMOS cameras to capture impressive shots. The observatory does much work in amateur research into meteors and spectroscopy as well as having a seismographic station to publish real-time signals. The primary CCD photoimaging telescope is housed within the unique octagonal dome. The observatory is really not to be missed while you are in the area.
