A trip to Lake Garda is not complete without a trip to one of the numerous castles that dot the lakeshore, and rest in the hillsides. You cannot fail but to stop and admire each creation as you circumnavigate the lake by car, bike, on foot or cross the lake on one of the plentiful boat trips or ferries.
All of the castles in the Lake Garda region have a fairytale magic about them, and they are the most photographed landmarks in each town. There presence and beauty make them the ideal place to get married, and have a wedding that both you and your guests will remember for a lifetime. Children will love exploring and pretending to shoot bows and arrows at the enemy, whilst the adults can learn about some fo the interesting stories that each castle holds.
The much photographed Castello Scaligero built in 500 A.D. by the Longobards that is nestled upon a rocky outcrop in the centre of Malcesine and so dominant that it can easily be picked out, even from the dizzying heights of Mount Baldo that towers over the town and reached by cable car Or how about Lazise Castle in the town of the same name with it's beautiful parkland that surround the building that are heavily inspired by the garden designs from the middle ages.
The castle at Lazise is the perfect place to unwind and smell the aroma of the flora on the lush green lawns whist marvelling at the architecture surrounding you.
And also the Scaliger Castle in Sirmione, dominant in the town. What makes this castle unique is that it is completely surrounded by the water of the lake giving it a natural moat. It even has its own harbour within the fortifications. After strolling around Sirmione it's the perfect place to grab a local ice cream to cool off and climb one of the towers (although perhaps not at the same time)!
