Lake Garda and the surrounding area is synonymous with high quality wine and, as a result, is a wine lovers paradise. Wine production is entwined in the history of Lake Garda. Evidence has been found of wine being produced in the region as far back as the middle ages. Due to the unique range of micro climates, vast array of terrain and the passion of the vine growers, the area is able to produce such a wealth of wines that one must simply take time to explore and appreciate the variety when visiting the area.
When holidaying in Lake Garda, there are no set rules for enjoying the wines. Each area produces it's own unique texture and flavour. The best way to discover is to simply explore. However, whilst the quality of wines is high throughout the region, the following 4 areas are of particular note:
Bardolino: Probably the most well known of the regions, this area produces light reds and, more recently, a rich rosé which is increasing in popularity.
Custoza: As famous for the great battle that occurred here in the fight for Italian independence against the Austrians as it is for it's wine, the grapes here are grown on the morainic hills and produce white wines that are strong yet versatile.
Lugana: The Southern area of the lake produces a white wine that is relatively modern in comparison with it's neighbours. Despite this, it is increasingly popular and is enjoyed as both a young and aged wine.
Valdadige: The wines from here are produced from grapes grown along the valley of the river Adige. The area is able to produce high quality reds and whites and, if you venture further North still, you will discover some wonderful sparkling wines.
